Hurricain Ike, Sept 12, 2008 : On Friday Sept 12, as bumper to bumper traffic fled the coast, I headed into the maw of the storm to house-sit the Longmont house. During the night the TV station went off air, then all power went out. From then on I was in an information vacuum, no word of what was happening, or what had happened, but by listening to the radio in my car and word of mouth. No color radar, no CNN. Cell phone use quickly became overloaded, unreliable and a hassel. For instance you went straight to voice mail, then voice mail was "busy". Text messaging continued to work. If you didn't have a car cell phone charger you were out of luck. My forways out to take pictures were very limited. Roads were clogged with debris or simply impassable due to high water or downed trees. And no traffic lights to boot. It was always a relief to get back "home" and start the cleanup (yuck!). The Longmont house fared well.
