Yosemite 2009 : Every year Ray Bertrolloti holds a 3-day dental seminar at the world class Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite Valley. He enjoys a cultish like following. I missed last year. I decided to attend this year. On Wednesday Oct 28 I flew US Airways from Austin to Oakland, rented a car from Payless which operated out of an Econolodge and from Oakland, drove straight away for Yosemite National Park, some 4-5 hours away. I arrived in Yosemite that evening, in time to see the last rays of sunlight on El Capitan. Temperature dipped to 29 that night, (left ice around the falls) but never got that cold again. The seminar/class was held over 3 days, 2:30 - 7 Thur & Fri, 9-1 on Saturday. So I had Thur & Fri mornings (29th & 30th) to see as much as I could. Weather was fantastic, but all weather in Yosemite is good. By 7pm it was dark so not much to do after class but find an WiFi hot spot, get a bite to eat, go home, settle in and play with the day's pictures. By the time the last class was over at 1pm Sat I was glad not to be dealing with another night in the park due to noticeable weekend crowding. After class Saturday I ran around the park until the last sunlight, then hung at the Ahwahnee for good measure (it was Halloween) and finally hit the road about 8 or 9 or so, drove one hour or more to Groveland where I scored a cheap motel for the night. From Groveland it was about 2 1/2 hours to Oakland. Groveland, at only 3,000' elevation,feels like its in the mountains. 24 miles from the park entrance, you go up to 6000 or so on the road to Yosemite, then drop down to the valley floor at 4000'. I love California's Sierra Nevadas!!
